The Sail Grand Prix (SailGP) Championship 2022- 2023, which is in its 3rd season, is made up of a calendar which takes place across the globe throughout the season where athletes pilot the world’s fastest boat- the F50 catamaran.
The F50 catamaran is a culmination of 10 years of development in high-performance, foiling, multi-hull racing. It was the first boat to hit 92.6 km/h during racing and has a predicted top speed of over 100 km/h.
The foils which are constructed with higher modulus carbon fiber bears rudders with elevators and two daggerboards, which has less resistance at high speeds. This must be balanced against the onset of cavitation – the reduction of water pressure caused by the foils resulting in water boiling and creating air bubbles which increase drag and reduce lift – which has to be delayed as much as possible until much higher speeds.
As SailGP is a one-design class, all teams use the same equipment in every race. The tech team operations manager will announce the final decision for equipment ahead of the start of racing, following a consultation process which includes the regatta director and one representative from each team.
9 teams representing countries participate in this season: Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States.
